Midcentury Modernist Mask. Coveted decorative African hand-carved wood mask with graphic elements, circa 1960s. This is a decorative item from the 1960s, it was made for export, it is not an antique tribal mask.
It was made by a master carver from a single piece of wood and was made for decorative and ceremonial purposes. It illustrates the legends and traditions of West Africa, and Ghana in particular.

With thoughtful features, a personage recalls the past and pays silent tribute to the ancestors. Applications of glowing brass adorn the forehead, and the cheeks are covered with recycled glass beads in brilliant colours. "This mask is used by the people of Saltpond in Central Ghana during the Odambea festival," Abdul Aziz Mohamadu (producer) explains. "The festival commemorates the migration to their present settlement." He names the piece Kia We Kye – "remember your past" in the Akan language. Details African rubberwood, brass+recycled glass
