John B Maingab.1954 - 2000KenyaRelatively little is known about this artist other than he was born in Kenya and was commissioned by the Watatu Gallery at the end of the last century to produce a series of paintings. JB came up with this rather unique visual technique.Mainga was the originator of a school of painting, which paints images within images, the school is known as the Mainga School of Painting - one of his students continues this technique is Masila who lives and works in Kenya.Mainga was hired by Ruth Shaffner, a great proponent and activist of art in Kenya, a white Kenyan woman who started the famous Gallery Watatu, to produce a series of paintings for the Gallery.Unfortunately, Ruth has since died, and so has Mainga who was killed after being runover by a Matatu - form of local transport - but not before his paintings, which were originally on leather were collected by art dealers around the world. This fine Batik measures 50 inches by 50 inches. The Batik will be removed from the frame for shipping overseas.
John werd er mee bekend als de Mainga School of Painting
Met als thema's de gemeenschap, de rol van moeders, de positie van de vrouw
